Salt Body Scrubs & Baths
Himalayan Sea Salts and Epsom Salts are a rich source of magnesium and other minerals beneficial for skin health. The salts can help exfoliate the skin which is the body’s largest elimination organ, promoting health and wellbeing. They can be made into a beautiful body scrub or dissolved in bath water for a long, relaxing soak.
Salt Baths
Magnesium salts such as Epsom and Himalayan salts are hydrating to the skin leaving it soft and supple. Magnesium is a muscular and all over body relaxant, so the salts are also beneficial for stress relief and muscular tension. Magnesium plays a role in the energy cycle, so can help to revitalise and re-energise a tired body alongside soothing aching muscles and joints. The salts can help decrease inflammation and the sulfates they contain are cleansing helping to remove toxins.
Both these salts can be dissolved into bath water, making the minerals highly absorbable through the skin. Try soaking in an Epsom or Himalayan Salt Bath once or twice a week for a minimum of 20 minutes and you will reap the benefits listed above. I use 1-2 cups of Epsom salts in a bath.
Salt Scrubs
Himalayan salts can also be made into a body scrub which is invigorating and refreshing to the skin. It’s important to exfoliate the top layer of the skin to remove dry and dead skin cells and bring the fresh new skin to the surface, giving it a more youthful appearance. The exfoliation process also helps remove impurities and toxins from the skin, un-blocks pores and reduces inflammation.
Follow the body scrub recipe below –
Body Scrub Recipe
- ½ cup of ground Himalayan salt
- ½ cup coconut oil
- Juice of 1 lemon or lime
- Mix the ingredients together and store in a jar.
Exfoliation Tips
- Try to exfoliate once or twice a week (depending on your skins needs),
- Remember you are exfoliating to remove the dead skin cells so don’t go overboard and exfoliate the healthy skin cells underneath as this will leave the skin red and sore,
- Wet the skin first, apply the body scrub and exfoliate in a circular motion, which will also give the circulation a boost and bring a nice rosy healthy glow to the skin,
- When the skin is rosy and invigorated wash the salt scrub off,
- Pat the body dry and moisturise with coconut oil or a natural moisturiser.
